Taizé Prayer Around the Cross, a Lenten Service

The prayer comes from the tradition established at the Taizé community in France. It is a meditative common prayer. Gathered in the presence of Christ, we sing uncomplicated repetitive songs, uncluttered by too many words, allowing the mystery of God to become tangible through the beauty of simplicity.

The Prayer Around the Cross is a way of expressing an invisible communion, not only with the crucified Jesus, but with all who suffer: all victims of abandonment, abuse, discrimination, torture, and all those condemned to silence. Those who come to the cross make a gesture such as kissing it, touching it, by bowing or genuflecting to it. In this way, they are entrusting silently to Christ all that burdens them as well as the difficulties and burdens of other people - both those they know personally and those who are far away: the oppressed, the ill, the poor, the persecuted and condemned. This prayer reminds us that here and now, risen from the dead, Christ accompanies every human being in his or her suffering, even when his presence is not recognized.
